The Ghost Bike is a memorial to someone who was killed or seriously injured in that spot. It is used as a reminder to everyone to please be safe and pay attention to the roads. Watch where you are going and share the space. Don't be in a hurry. The Ghost Bike is usually a fixed bike painted white and cemented or locked in place. The Ghost Bike above is a beautiful bike that pays special tribute to a wonderful woman, wife, sister and mother. The basket holds memorial cards.
Ghostbikes.org is an organization that has been unable to add information about Ghost Bikes inside New York City, and since 2012, outside of New York City. Ghostbikes.org is intended to be a site for the worldwide cycling community. Contact them for information on ghost bike work being done in your area. The site was initially set up by the NYC Street Memorial Project. Ghostbike.org reflects NYC's project very well, but much of the information on other places is incomplete. Ghostbike.org hopes to create a space where those lost on dangerous streets can be remembered by their loved ones, members of their local communities, and others from around the world. They also hope to inspire more people to start installing ghost bikes in their communities and to initiate changes that will make us all safer on the streets.
Please be safe out there while drive and while riding.
